The building, which was still under construction and designed to have three basement levels and 13 suspended floors, has been cordoned off as multi-agency teams carry out technical assessments to determine whether it can be salvaged or requires demolition.

The National Construction Authority (NCA) has halted construction at a residential development along Peponi Road in Westlands, Nairobi, after a structural failure was reported at the site.

The building, which was still under construction and designed to have three basement levels and 13 suspended floors, has been cordoned off as multi-agency teams carry out technical assessments to determine whether it can be salvaged or requires demolition.

In a statement, the NCA said it received the report on Monday, December 15, 2025, regarding the development located on L.R. No. Nairobi Block/199 (Original L.R. No. 1870/11/165). “In furtherance of the Authority’s mandate and in line with Sections 5 and 23 of the National Construction Authority Act, 2011, a quality assurance team was immediately dispatched to the site for a compliance check,” the Authority said.

After confirming the structural issues, all construction work was suspended, and the site secured to protect the public.

“All construction works were immediately suspended, and the site was cordoned off to safeguard the public,” the NCA added.

According to NCA records, the project had been registered on September 27, 2026, under registration number 53127415710979. The contractor is Meraki Universal Building Limited, with architect Peter Kamau Mwang and structural engineer Samuel Maina Wairimu part of the professional team.

The area around the site is currently under the control of the National Disaster Management Unit and the National Police Service. Nearby residents have been advised to temporarily vacate the area as a precaution while further assessments are conducted.

To guide the next steps, the NCA has formed a Multi-Sectoral Agencies Coordinating Committee (MSACC) to carry out a detailed technical evaluation of the structure. The committee includes officers from the Engineers Board of Kenya, the Board of Registration of Architects and Quantity Surveyors, the National Environment Management Authority, Nairobi City County Government, the National Buildings Inspectorate, the National Youth Service, and other relevant agencies.

“The committee is actively undertaking a detailed technical assessment to determine the structural integrity of the building and establish whether the structure can be safely salvaged or requires controlled demolition,” the NCA said.

The Authority emphasized that public safety remains the top priority. “No further construction activities will be permitted on the site until the ongoing investigations are concluded,” it said.

Members of the public have been advised to stay away from the affected area and follow official updates from the NCA as more information becomes available.
